In January 1992, a meeting was held to form a club in the Astoria area. The response was magnificent and after much discussion the “Astoria Gaels Football and Social club” was formed. After the committee elected the inaugural board of Officers the club affiliated with the New York GAA in the Junior B Competition. Funds were gathered by way of generous donations from bars, businesses and individuals within the Queens area. Fund raisers were also organized and due to the hard work by the members of the club enough funds were in place to move ahead with their activities. The football team had a tremendous year and was undefeated in five divisional games and qualified for the semi-final stages. There they came up against a “strong” Kerry squad who in the last 10 minutes got some crucial scores and defeated the Gaels by 3-08 to 2-04. The display of heart and commitment shown by the Gaels on that faithful evening showed however a deep resolve and promised successful days to come. The middle of their first summer was christened by a monster barbeque with over 200 members and supporters on hand in Wards Island. The Island also served as the training ground for the Gaelic Squad on their quest for success. A dinner dance at the end of the year was held at the Golden Pheasant on Broadway in Astoria with over 400 guests on hand to honor Gaels of the year Paschal McKiernan and Mike McGarry from Shroid Construction and celebrate the first year of the clubs existence. A monster journal was also produced with 130 pages of adds in support of the club. The journal debuted the crest of the club which was designed by Mary McCarthy and now graces both jerseys and gear bags alike. The club has gone from strength to strength with the additions of two soccer squads and the graduation to Junior A in the following years as it has spread its wings across Queens and the surrounding boro’s. Tyrone Man Sean Rice was the clubs first President with Martin Hanrahan Vice-president. The First football manager was Brendan Ryan with trainer Donie O’Sullivan.
